Testing our contraption

Today we added a strong handle for our box to be able to be attached to the flying fox. We attached our box to the flying fox so we could test the distance and speed and it would be traveling at. We did four experiments with each one getting timed, we then added all of the different speeds it traveled at, and then divided that answer by 4. This gave us an average speed that it was traveling at. The one thing we need to modify on our box is adding a lid because when we were testing it the egg cartons flew out, which means squashed tomatoes.

Tomato challenge part 2

At this stage we have half built our device. We still need some wire to hold the device and make it mobile. Our next stage is to build the zip line so we can do the experiment and gather info.

Tomato Zipline

For this unit, project we have to make design something that will carry tomatoes to the market in Nepal. Jordyn and I will be making  a box it will be going down the flying fox, the minim it can travel  is one meter. We will be making it by hand with wood or cardboard, and we will make two hole on the side of the creation and rap some rope around the inside of the hole and we will tie it to the flying fox to make a Zipline, to travel to the market to make easier for the people in Nepal to transport their tomatoes from the top of the hills to the bottom of the hill to the Nepal market. If we succeed we have saved the people who lived in Nepal 3 long hot hours of walking uphill and downhill to transport their tomatoes to make money.

A Pulpy Predicament

In room 7 we have started a tomatoe challenge where we are in partners and we have to create a thing that can take some tomatoes at least 1m without squashing the tomatoes. You are only allowed to give your creation one push to start it off. We are only allowed to use recyclable materials and it will be due in week 6.

9.11.16
Today have brought some of our materials and we have started to create our device we also finished our measurements sheet. To finish our carrying device we need to stick on some wheels and add in the egg cartons to the inside of the box.

Pulpy Predicament Project

For our tomato challenge, we decided to make a zip line using a bucket, two poles and some baling twine. To make sure the tomatoes don't get squashed, we will use some egg cartons and pillow stuffing in the bucket.
There will also be a bit of string connected to it so we can pull it back up when we need it.
We think it will be a successful creation because the tomatoes will be really well protected and it will get to its destination quicker.

A pulpy predicament

Room7 have been doing a tomato challenge and the objective of the challenge is to work in a group of two and create something that would travel  tomatoes a distance of one meter. Blake and I decided to create a slide like pipe to travel the tomato we'll get a pipe cut four lines on the top and stick pieces of cardboard with string attached, the pipe will also we filled with pillows or bubblerap. To make sure the tomato won't be damaged when the tomato is ready we will pull the string that is attached to the closest cardboard then it will roll and be stopped by the next pieces of card board. And keep doing the same to the rest until it reaches its destination.

Tomato challenge

In class we have been assigned the tomato challenge, we have to make something to transport tomatoes without any human support and without damaging the tomatoes. This is where we are up to at the moment we will keep u updated.

Olympic infographic

In room 7 we have been doing a infographic about the Olympics. We had to pick a country from the Olympics and research about them. Our writing is only allowed to be 3 minutes of reading. This is what I have done so far.

I will keep you updated.

Our fun experience at the Maths Spectacular

Today we went to the maths spectacular in New Plymouth. There was about 5 other schools including Ngaere. We saw heaps of amazing art work made by other kids and schools. My favourite art work was the peacock made out of paper. It was really colourful. (Kaya and Ashley) My favourite thing was the watermelon and pineapple made out of folded paper I liked it because it looked colourful an life like(jorja)I liked the rubix cube board because I learned how many people played with them or do play with them so how popular they are and how many different combinations there are to solving them(breeze)

Chook pen

I Am hoping to make a chook pen for the school. I have looked at three different designs and I chose my favourite one . It is good for the school because you can grow vegetables or herbs on the side of it and it can hold about 3-5 chooks. We would like to use the scraps from school as food for the chooks. I am now looking up materials and finding their costs.

lead conference 2016

Dear to dream.
What I took in from the lead conference was, some times in life there will be some knock down.
Which is where you won't always be able to be famous in life, sometimes there will be hurdles that you will need to overcome. Also u should never give up because some day you will succeed at that thing your where going to give up on at trying.

LEAD 2016

Check out my blog for information about the LEAD conference 2016 from my perspective.

Lead 2016

On Friday the 19th the leaders of Ngaere attended a lead conference in New Plymouth. The most important part I took away from was how people got knocked down but persevered and was able to go back and try again. The speaker I liked the most was Jack Brown because in September 2015 he was in a car crash and as a result he is now in a wheelchair and cannot feel or move his legs. He has had less than a year to learn how to balance and to control a wheel chair. He has also just been selected for the under 23 New Zealand basketball team.

Lead conference 2016

On Friday, 11 of the leaders left on an adventure to New Plymouth for the lead conference. It was a very fun day With lots of speakers and fun activities. The thing that I found the best was jack brown who was put in a wheel chair after a fatal car crash that left him paralysed, he started playing basketball in his wheel chair and his dream was to get into the New Zealand team for basketball and make it to the Olympics. Within only one year he has already made it to New Zealand team. This showed me that dreams can come true and that nothing can hold u back

The leader conference 2016

On Friday the 19th of August eleven students from Ngaere school went to a leader conference up in New Plymouth. We got told about other people's lives and experiences from when they were growing up. There were six men Nathaniel, Sam, Jack, Jordan, Oscar and Ashtrin. There were two girls Abby and Victoria. Jack had been in a car crash late December last year he has been and still does play basketball but now in a wheel chair. Abby was on the x factor with another girl called Hannah in a team called Mae valley they tried so any times trying to get in but got dropped all of the times they didn't give up and kept on trying.

Genius Hour

In room 7 we have this thing called genius hour. This time round we had to come up with 2 ideas of anything for genius hour we chose making a generator and learning the history of WWI. We then had to rule up four quarters in our page and write down 4 question which were What is it?(Product, area of learning), Where or who is it for?, Why do we need it?What is the purpose?, What learning will you or other people gain? The one we want to do most is making the generator because it's a fun way of learning basic and complicated electronics.

Genius hour term 3

My group and I have been trying to convince Mrs England to get together a little cooking class for the juniors so the kids can have experience the feel of food and learn how to make their own lunches.

Genius hour

So far we have put down both our first and backup ideas, and are up to pitching them to Miss Boatswain  what we are hoping to do is conduct our very own proper experiment using different chemicals. The second idea is to plan and create a tree fort in the sandpit tree. Our next step is to see if we can get our idea approved by Miss Boatswain. We would learn how to conduct a proper experiment using a method, we will also be Collecting data in a range of ways in the sand we will present our data collection and experiments on an I movie. We believe that our idea fits into the curriculum because what we are doing is science.

Genius hour

This term we are doing a genius hour project, we picked gymnastics for our project. We have planned our weekly timetable, what we hope to achieve at the end of our project is to develop new skills in coaching, planning and gymnastics. We are really excited to start this programme, and can't wait to share our progress with you.

Genius hour Learn to test

In room 7 we are doing something called genius hour. For our genius hour we are doing learn to test and we decided to do a test in what rusts metal faster out of vinegar or water. We have now done our pitch and are ready to get approved and start. We will also test what materials don't dissolve. And then hopefully put this on rusty part of the school.

Term 3, Genius hour.

This term we have started a new genius hour project in groups of three!
our group consists of Emma, Keisya and me, Tylah.
We had to pick two ideas and choose our favourite one to pitch to mrs England . Our two ideas were to make a healthy cook book to inspire our students to make delicious and healthy food for our families and friends or to bring to school in their lunches, and our second idea was to start fundraising for a 3D printer for our school to learn about new technology and to boost their creativity!
We will be blogging our progress throughout the term and hopefully fundraising for a 3D printer!

Genius Hour learn to do/Learn to make

This genius hour we got to pick anything we wanted to do but it had to have some sort of learning in it. So we decided we wanted to design a new PE Shed structure and expand it so there was more space. We also are hoping to make the inside of the PE Shed more efficient so that it is easier for the teachers and students to use. Our first step was to get it approved by Mrs England, then we went down and did an observation of the existing PE Shed. Two things that we liked were  the ball holders and the equipment, Two things we didn't like were the lack of space and storage, we also didn't like that it didn't have lights. Our next step is to research the cost of it and what we can reuse from the existing PE Shed.

Maths eyes

This week we have been working on developing our maths eyes, this is a task that miss boatswain gave us to work on our maths eyes. See if you can work these out.

Our maths eyes around the playground

Math eyes

For maths we have been focusing on developing maths eyes. We went around the school in groups of 3 and had to find 3 different photos and add a math question to the photo. We had to take the 3 photos and make them into a pic-collage along with the 3 questions. The pictures are up above can you answer them, put your answer in the comments below.

Maths eyes

Our focus lately has been to develop maths eyes our task was to use the environment around us to make 3 maths questions.

Maths eyes

For the last couple of days room 7 has been learning how to use our maths eyes. We had to go outside and find the maths in the real world by using equations and redeveloping my maths eyes.

Maths eyes development

We have been developing our maths eye.
We had to go out side and find maths problems around  the  environment, also we had to think of math questions to go with our Pictures

OUR MATH EYES

In room 7 we have been learning how to use/get our math eyes. We have created some paper glasses so we can open our maths eyes.we have drawn what we think math is on the glasses,we also walked around the school and found things that represent maths.

How well being effect to our digestive system

Well being is some of area that we have to balanced.well being had 4 areas that showing effect to our body first is our physical well being,if we not cared about our physical well being (not eat healthy food=balanced diet, not really exersice as much, and don't get enough rest) our digestive system will get sick too,so from now on we have to care about our digestive system too cause is our responsibility to care about it

Ngaere schools netball

In Ngaere whites netball team there is Alyssa (team captain), Emma, Breeze, Rylee, Katie and Megan.
We have played two games so far and lost the first and then won the last 45-1.
It was an epic surprise for the shooter and the rest of the team. Our shooter was Emma. She was very proud and so were we. Our team is playing two games this weekend at eleven and twelve in TET stratford. Please wish us all the best of luck for this Saturday.

Awesome line art!!

This is kodys line art he is not quite finished but looking great so far.
His next step is to finish the background.
We had to draw a design and incorporate lots of different types of lines.
E.g Ray perpendicular parallel line segments

Room7 Art

In room 7 we have been doing art, we have to get a small picture then inlarge it to a A3 piece of paper, then we had to choose our background while using different types of line, then we coloured it with black and white pastels. We also boxed out the most important part of the picture and coloured that in.

Wind interference experiment

Room 7 had to test some equipment for Taranaki Kiwi Trust. Each group had a different test, our group had wind interferences. Watch this video to see what we had to do...
                                                                         |
                                                                        \/

We learnt that wind does effect the ability to hear a Kiwi call from 80 metres. When we were camping up the mountain we couldn't hear any calls which proves that our theory might be true.

Room 7's Mt Taranaki camp 2016

This term room 7 got asked by Taranaki kiwi trust team to help them experiment if there were any kiwi on the mountain. We stayed at konini lodge at the Dawson falls visitors centre. We had to walk around in three groups. We walked some tracks up and down steps, over bridges and streams. Ryan's group did the most walking and our leader was Nathan from the Taranaki kiwi trust and he held the speaker that makes the kiwi calls and we could only herd some calls. My highlight was climbing willies pools.

Camp experiences

We went on camp on Wednesday and came back to school on Thursday and camp was fun.
We walked in separate groups and met up at the end of the day, during the day we recorded male and female kiwi calls.
We also went on a night walk and found some weta.
Thank you to all the parents and teachers for making camp happen and keeping us safe.

Kiwi science experiment

In Room 7 we have been collecting Kiwi data for our camp up the mountain.
We worked on our experiments for one week but have been doing research for 1 term. Next Wednesday we are leaving school for 1 night  and 2 days doing our experiments up on the mountain with  Taranaki Kiwi Trust. We now think that a female call sounds like a hoot and a males call sounds like a screech. On our school field we set up a speaker with the male and female calls and every twenty metres we put two students at that spot and collected how many calls we could hear at each mark. We found out that the further the metres got the less calls we could hear, the furthest we went was 200 metres which would be two lengths of our school field. We are. Ow at the point of graphing on google sheets

How the durable is the equipment that we are using

In Room 7 we are recording male and female kiwi calls. We have recorded data of how many kiwi calls we heard, through windy conditions and rain. Our group is testing the durability of the equipments we are using. We are graphing the amount of kiwi calls we hear from a distance for example 20m - 120m. The wind effected us from hearing the kiwi calls and carried the sound through the air. We all had 20m intervals, 20m-120m. The durability group had trouble on deciding the experiments because we didn't want to break the gear. So we have to find something made of the same materials. So we hung it in a tree with a mat under it so if it fell it would have no damage on it. We have had so much fun.

Kiwi experiments

Leading up to our camp up the mountain, We have been doing experiments to see if the road noise interferes with us hearing kiwi calls. We used a phone and a Bluetooth speaker to create the sound of the calls of both the male and female kiwi call. We had to record how many times we could hear the female and male calls. Every time we heard one of the calls we had to put a dash down and then we did a graph with all the information. There was a person at twenty metre intervals recording how many calls they heard. Then we had to go onto an I-pad and make another graph showing the results of every test our group done. We are doing this for Taranaki Kiwi Trust for a research project that they are including schools in for the first time. There were other tests being done by other groups as well like durability, wind interference, range, depth and more. Doing all these tests will help us on our camp up the mountain so we can see what interferes with hearing a kiwi call and finding a kiwi. The data that we collect will be used to see how many kiwi are still on the mountain.

Ry's Health Quest Day 20

Day 20

Sorry I haven't been blogging lately, our computer died and mum just brought a new one.

Today I did athletics all day so I did a lot of running around.  This was because the more I run around the healthier I get and it makes my muscles stronger.

I started my day with weetbix which was a healthy choice because it has fibre and not much sugar in it.  I ate an apple with my lunch and a muesli bar.  I did buy myself a couple of sweet things but that was alright really because I was doing lots of running so I burnt off a lot of fat.

I drank 2 glasses of water today but that wasn't enough to keep me hydrated especially because I was moving around a lot.  I need to drink at least 5 glasses of water everyday especially on days like this when I am running around a lot.

My goal for tomorrow is to drink 5 glasses of water and eat at least 5 pieces of fruit and vegetables.

Action plan

Action plan - My action plan is to record my foods and drinks nutritional labels everyday for one month so I can keep an eye out on my diet.  This will help me to choose what foods and drinks I have because sometimes I don't choose the healthy options when there are as I am more inclined to choose the sugary drinks.  I am going to increase my water intake and exercise.

Action plan for the senior students of Ngaere School - To have an only water policy which will help the students to keep healthy and active.  To encourage the students to have a healthy lunchbox which includes more fruit, and less food items that contain high intake of sugar.  For example: Crackers, popcorn, carrots and dried fruit.

Cy's weekend

My Easter weekend was long and sometimes annoying but sometimes fun. We got lots of chocolate and we went to Hamilton for Easter. We went to Hamilton on Saturday and did lots of fun things. We left Hamilton on Sunday.

Cameron's Term

My first term has been a fantastic start to the year. The best part about it is the amount of health and science experiments we have had. I am excited to go on the kiwi camp because we are helping the Taranaki kiwi trust. I have also liked doing small challenges like the marshmallow challenge. And the Pom Pom launchers. I have had a great term

Marsh mallow challenge supplies

Blake's term 1

This term has been good and I have enjoyed my time in room 7 has a year 8. My favourite part so far has been making thing by hand like the marshmallow challenge.

This is not one of the ones we did
